Coffee Roast Dictionary

Most people don't realize there is more than just one roast of coffee! In fact, espresso is made, not necessarily from special espresso beans, but usually from coffee beans roasted to bring out the flavor and oils. Read our list to learn more.

Raw Green Beans Not the kind disliked by children all over the world! Selecting the right raw beans is essential to making the best coffee.
American Roast The lightest roast, American roast is light brown and tastes like "typical" coffee. Usually no oils on the surface of the bean.
Vienna Roast Slightly darker than American, but the extra minutes of roasting makes all the difference. Oil spots the surface of the bean and creates a delicious character to the coffee.
Full City Roast A currently popular dark roast that is intense, rich, and aromatic without overpowering the nuances of the coffee.
French Roast A typical dark roast for espresso drinks (cappuccino, etc.) that are not as strong. Usually drunk in small portions.
Espresso Roast Very dark, almost black, with heavy oil. Strong tasting and usually reserved for drinks blended with milk. Lighter espresso roasts allow for more flavor.
